Update: Remediation Work at 555 Booth Street

Dear Glebe Annex residents,

Please find the following message from Natural Resources Canada regarding the ongoing remediation project at 555 Booth Street.

Subject: Soil Remediation at 555 Booth / Nettoyage du sol au 555, rue Booth

(La version en français suit)

Cleanup project at 555 Booth Street is about to begin

Soil at 555 Booth Street is being removed because historic activities on the site left elevated concentrations of certain substances (metals and hydrocarbons). While these substances do not pose a threat to people, they have the potential to affect plants and organisms in the soil. The cleanup will consist of removing the soil and replacing it with clean material.

Work at the site is expected to start the first week of July. Excavation work will focus first on the west side of the site and centre courtyard. The second phase of work, on the east and south sides of the building and the area north of the main loading dock, is scheduled to begin in mid-August. Repaving and landscaping are expected to be completed by November 2017.

Building access and parking

Plywood construction fencing is expected to be installed around 555 Booth Street July 4. The fencing will block access to parts of the property, but the building and main entrance will remain open and functioning.

Parking spaces in the centre courtyard and west half of the lot on the north side of the building will not be available during this first phase of the project (expected to be six weeks; July 4 to mid August). Staff may use the east half of the north lot or other Impark Lot 66 areas at the Booth Street Complex.

Monitoring

During the cleanup, the use of heavy equipment outside the building will generate dust, noise, exhaust fumes and perhaps vibrations. NRCan will follow strict environmental protocols and monitor air quality/dust levels. Real-time dust (particulate) monitoring equipment will be set up outside the building, and dust samples will be collected outside and inside weekly.

Thank You Glebe Annex Residents for Helping to Clean Up the Capital!

Dear Glebe Annex residents,

I would like to thank everyone who came out on Saturday, April 29th to help clean up our neighbourhood and get it ready for an exciting summer. Working together, over a dozen residents cleaned up our neighbourhood’s streets and the Dalhousie South Park. Walking around the neighbourhood on Sunday, it was apparent how all of your hard work has made our community an even more beautiful place to live. Congratulations to everyone.

I hope that you all had a great time and you’ll join us again in the Fall. If you want to get more involved, please join us at one of our executive meetings. Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 17th in the Meeting Room at the Glebe Community Centre from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. We look forward to seeing you there.

Thanks again to our sponsor, the Buduchnist Credit Union for sponsoring our community clean up and providing everyone with much-need donuts and coffee. They’ve posted photos of the event on their website at http://www.buduchnist.com/news.php/news/377/group/13. Please find some more photos of our cleanup posted below:
