February 15th Open House for Booth St Preferred Concept

Canada Lands Company (CLC) will be hosting an open house meeting for “Rue Booth Street” – the redevelopment of the Booth St. Complex. This next meeting will feature the public presentation of the draft preferred concept plan for the site. The plan is the culmination of CLC’s consultation to this point, taking into account the feedback received from prior public meetings, its ongoing work with various community stakeholders, the Public Advisory Group, as well as local residents.

Public Consultation: Dalhousie South Park Renewal

The renewal and improvement of our neighbourhood’s only park is one step closer to reality!

This is the first time in 25 years that the park has had any major updates – we have to make this one count, as we’ll likely be living with the result for another 25 years!

City of Ottawa’s Heritage Inventory Project is moving into our neighbourhood!

The below letter is sent on behalf of the City of Ottawa’s Heritage Inventory Project. The Heritage Inventory Project is a city-wide strategic initiative which is evaluating buildings built before 1980 for heritage significance.

Taking Stock of Our Built Heritage

The City of Ottawa is undertaking a major project identifying buildings, structures and other built resources of cultural heritage value. The ‘Heritage Inventory Project’ is a city-wide project involving the surveying and evaluation of a vast array of Ottawa’s built resources, from the modest worker’s houses of Lowertown, to the fine Arts and Crafts homes in Brantwood Place, to the century old barns of Kinburn, and even the numerous bridges that span our city’s many waterways.

The goal of the Heritage Inventory Project is to create certainty around Ottawa’s heritage resources with a complete, well-researched, up-to-date list of all heritage resources in the city that are not already protected by the Ontario Heritage Act.

Properties identified through the project will not be designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, rather they will be added to the City’s Heritage Register.  A rigorous update to the City’s Heritage Register will be beneficial for property owners, developers, heritage advocates, elected officials, planning staff, community groups and all concerned residents. Being listed on the Heritage Register will not affect the property owner’s ability to make changes to the exterior or interior of their building, and it does not require the property owner to restore the building. Property owners will need to provide the City of Ottawa with 60 days notice of intent to demolish.

The research method for the project includes photographing, describing architectural characteristics and evaluating thousands of built resources throughout the city. The results of the Heritage Inventory Project will be accessible on GeoOttawa and also the city’s website.

We’re asking community members to share information about their properties or other buildings or structures in their neighbourhood. We would love to know who designed your home or the original use of a particular building.

Survey: What do you envision for 291 Carling Avenue?

On  November 28, Canada Lands Company (CLC), held a Public Information Meeting to discuss the future of 291 Carling Avenue. This is the large (3.3 acre, 300 parking space) parking lot between Bell St. South and Lebreton St. South at Carling Ave. which was acquired earlier from the federal government this year by CLC. It will be developed by CLC and the Algonquins of Ontario.The community has been requested to provide input as to what they would like to see in this space in the short term, but also in terms of legacy. This is a unique opportunity in that we are starting with a clean slate, as there are no buildings currently on the site, nor is the property slated for a specific type of project.

There will be another public meeting in February 2018 in which a draft plan will be presented to the community. The plan is expected to be approved by the city in late fall 2018, after which CLC will prepare the property before marketing and selling it to builders.

If interested, please fill out the survey by early January in order to provide enough time for CLC to consider your input for the February meeting.

Civic Hospital Public Engagement

Please find below information on public engagement efforts regarding the Civic Hospital. This marks the beginning of the engagement and consultation process with the Ottawa Hospital, and your participation could help inform planning in later stages.


In-person Information Sessions & Q&A
Upcoming Information Sessions in Ottawa:
  • Thursday, Dec 7: 7-8:45 p.m. Tom Brown Arena (141 Bayview Road, Hintonburg)
  • Monday, Dec 11: 7-8:45 p.m. Old Town Hall Upstairs room (61 Main St – Old Ottawa East)
The information sessions will cover health care needs and planning, the design of modern health centres and how to engage in the planning process, and will include a Q&A session with experts and hospital representatives.
Online Engagement
The hospital is looking for input as to what should be considered in the planning process. You can submit your ideas here:  https://www.engageottawahospital.ca/. These considerations will help inform the work of a Community and Patient Working Group that will be established in 2018.  (Note that you can also subscribe to their newsletter through this page.)

Let your voice be heard

These engagements may provide an opportunity to raise some of the key issues raised by GACA, such as:
  • Can an increased height be considered, like many modern inner city hospitals have done, in order to save precious greenspace?
  • Is there any chance to save Queen Juliana Park or any of the public greenspace located beyond the Sir John Carling Building?
  • Will the DARA Tennis courts be preserved?
  • Will there be any public pathways to connect our communities to the Arboretum via the hospital grounds?

Flora and Fauna/Landscape Architecture:

  • Will there be any priority to not harm the abundance of animals living on these lands, including possible relocation?
  • Will there be a consideration to create underpasses for animals linking the Arboretum to hospital greenspace and the remaining Agricultural lands?
  • Will there be an effort to preserve the hundreds of trees? Perhaps a buffer perimeter and new plantings?
  • Once greenspace is lost, it is lost forever. What measures will the hospital take to ensure that as much as possible of the greenspace remain greenspace?
  • Is the hospital considering multi-storey parking in order to reduce its footprint?
  • How does the hospital plan to mitigate the impact on local businesses by removing parking spaces, particularly during festivals and eventssuch as the Tulip Festival, Winterlude, and various other festivals in Little Italy?

Traffic Volume, Management & Safety/Access:

  • How will traffic be managed so the flow of traffic in and out of the hospital will not impact regular traffic?
  • How will the hospital encourage staff and patient visitors to use public transportation to the new campus?
Air Pollution & Quality, Noise Pollution, Wind, Light Reflection and Safety/Design:
  • Will the hospital’s design include considerations for issues such as avoiding a wind tunnel effect or creating excessive noise for the surrounding community?
Integration & Encroachment:
  • How will the hospital integrate into our community?

The Councillor’s Office has notified us about following upcoming closures of the Queen Elizabeth Drive and Colonel By Drive on November 3rd and 4th.

  • Queen Elizabeth Drive and Colonel By Drive – Queen Elizabeth Drive and Colonel By Drive will be closed to allow for the installation of the Rideau Canal Skateway chalets.
  • Queen Elizabeth Drive will be closed in both directions on Friday, November 3 from 8:45 am to noon between Fifth Avenue and Bank Street.
  • Colonel By Drive will be closed in both directions on Saturday, November 4 from 5 am to 12:30 p.m. between Daly Avenue and Hawthorn Avenue.
  • Colonel By Drive will be closed in both directions on Saturday, November 4 from noon to 3 p.m. between Bronson Avenue and Hog’s Back Road.
